Cost of food aid soars as need rises

A ”perfect storm” of drought, conflict and rising costs has increased the ranks of the chronically hungry by millions of people, and forced aid workers to find and fund longer-term solutions to the food crisis. The United Nations says the number of hungry people worldwide rises by an average of four million each year.

Body-parts case postponed

A Durban hospital cleaner accused of dealing in human body parts appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, covering her face from the public gallery. Hloniphile Jeaneth Sokhela (32) is accused of contravening the Human Tissue Act after police allegedly found human body parts and a placenta in her possession.

Minister: Plans to regulate schools during strikes

The Department of Education is looking to regulate the responsibilities of senior teaching staff during strikes, says Education Minister Naledi Pandor. ”Currently, I have no plans to declare teaching an essential service,” she said in written reply to a question in the National Council of Provinces by Motlatjo Thetjeng of the Democratic Alliance.

Pereiro replaces Landis as 2006 Tour winner

Spain’s Oscar Pereiro on Monday received the yellow jersey from the 2006 Tour de France at a ceremony in Madrid, officially replacing United States rider Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his title for doping. ”This is an emotional moment, a day that I will never forget,” said Pereiro after Tour director Christian Prudhomme awarded him the jersey.
