The Algerian army is ”on the road to victory” over the Maghreb branch of the al-Qaeda network, responsible for suicide attacks in the North African country, according to a French anti-terrorism expert. The Maghreb branch has introduced suicide bomb attacks that have targeted government and army positions in Algeria.

Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza has named a new unity Cabinet, drawing members from two leading opposition groups in a bid to end months of political deadlock in the troubled African nation. The new Cabinet comprises 19 ministers and seven deputy ministers, presidential spokesperson Leonidas Hatungimana said.

President Robert Mugabe on Thursday commissioned the first biodiesel production plant in oil-starved Zimbabwe, vowing that the country will ”never collapse”. ”As a nation we have once again demonstrated that the ill-fated sanctions against the innocent people of Zimbabwe can never subdue our resilience,” Mugabe said at the plant’s official opening.

The death toll from a building site accident in eastern China when an elevator plunged more than 20 storeys has reached 11 after five of the injured died in hospital, state media said on Thursday. The accident happened at a nearly completed block of flats in Wuxi City in Jiangsu province.

The initial cause of the diarrhoea outbreak in Delmas was water contamination, said Mpumalanga Premier Thabang Makwetla on Thursday. ”When we noticed the outbreak in October, we discovered that the water was contaminated,” he said. However, Makwetla said that more cases were reported after the water was purified.

Eighteen coffins, suspected to have been stolen from graves, were found in an empty home in Soshanguve, Pretoria, the Sowetan reported on Thursday. Police raided the abandoned home on Wednesday, removing the coffins, which seem to have been dug up from graves, the report said.

An official inquiry has concluded that Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool misled his legislature, a source in the legislature said on Thursday. The multiparty inquiry was set up to investigate contradictory statements last year on spending on security upgrades to the home of community safety minister Leonard Ramatlakane.
