Dismal foursomes cost Internationals dearly

The Internationals, who outgunned the Americans in world ranking strength, were left to rue their dismal foursomes record after losing the Presidents Cup by 19-½ points to 14-½ on Sunday. Despite boasting nine players in the world top 19 at Royal Montreal Golf Club this week, the Internationals won a mere half point out of a possible 11.

SA win toss and bat in Karachi

South African captain Graeme Smith won the toss and elected to bat in the first Test against Pakistan on Monday after Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf pulled out at the last minute. The 33-year-old Yousuf last week cancelled his contract with a rebel Indian league and made himself available for Pakistan.

Suicide bomber in Pakistan kills 15

A suicide bomber wearing a burqa set off explosives in the north-western Pakistani town of Bannu on Monday killing up to 15 people, including four policemen, security officials said. The blast was the lastest in a wave of attacks, most in the north-west of the country near the border with Afghanistan.

Mbeki ‘must break his silence on Pikoli’

The Democratic Alliance is to ask President Thabo Mbeki questions in Parliament relating to National Prosecuting Authority head Vusi Pikoli’s suspension and the reported warrant of arrest issued for police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi. The party’s parliamentary leader Sandra Botha said it was "imperative that the president informs the nation".
