Three suspected armed robbers apprehended

Three men were arrested in Johannesburg on Wednesday in connection with an attempted armed robbery. ”The suspects were arrested in Braamfontein and they fit the description of the suspects that were spotted at Pick ‘n Pay in Jorissen Street while fleeing from the police,” said Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini.

Pupil kills seven at school in Finland

At least seven people died when a gunman opened fire at a school in southern Finland on Wednesday, hours after a video was posted on YouTube predicting a school massacre. A teacher at Jokela High School said the gunman was one of its pupils. Three people were wounded in the shooting, according to early reports.

‘Zimbabwe needs outside help’

Police torture and brutality are rife and High Court orders are openly disregarded in Zimbabwe, pointing to a ”grave constitutional crisis”, according to a report released on Wednesday. The most worrying aspect is open attacks on members of the legal profession, said advocate Andrea Gabriel.

In one day I received three emails telling me I had won money: the first, from international payment company PayPal, informed me that someone I had never heard of had paid me 000; the second told me the United States Internal Revenue Services owed me money — even though I have never been a US taxpayer — and the third said I had won â,¬550 000 in the Spanish Lottery.

Oil crosses $98 a barrel

Oil prices jumped to a new trading record above $98 a barrel on Wednesday amid expectations of declining United States supplies. The weak dollar and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries’s apparent reluctance to pump more crude into the market also boosted prices.

Hawkers don’t want to be marginalised for 2010

Hawkers, often the breadwinners of their families, should not be marginalised in the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup, a colloquium on the international soccer spectacle heard in Johannesburg on Wednesday. Stadiums under construction are often far from amenities and hawkers are providing much-needed services to construction workers.
