Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have launched an inquiry into the suspected dumping of 18 tonnes of highly radioactive minerals into a river in Katanga province. The minerals, including 17 tonnes of copper ore with a level of radioactivity 50 times the tolerable limit, were seized last month in the southern Katanga mining town of Likasi.

People who open false cases and are convicted of the crime will pay police back for investigating the case, Durban central police station Commissioner Bala Naidoo said on Wednesday. ”If they don’t pay my money back, I will go back and arrest them,” said Naidoo at a press briefing in Durban.

The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) in the Moses Kotane municipality in the North West Province said it was shocked to learn that the mayor intends to use public money to hire a personal chef. The union said it had tabled a demand that the position be cancelled.

The JSE, ranked among the top 20 exchanges worldwide in terms of market capitalisation, will celebrate its 120th birthday on Thursday, it said in a statement on Wednesday. ”Today [Wednesday], the JSE’s total market capitalisation is over R6-trillion with approximately 400 companies listed,” said Russell Loubser, CEO of the JSE.

After bouncing back to 98,7 in October, the SACCI Business Confidence Index (BCI) dipped to 96,9 in October, which is its lowest level since June 2004. The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that businesses were becoming concerned about international economic developments as well as local adjustments.

South African investment firm Mvelaphanda Group (Mvela) said on Wednesday that it was in talks that may affect its share price if successfully concluded, sending its stock price higher. Mvela said the cautionary was not related to the deal in which the firm said it had agreed with fund management group Allan Gray to buy up to 30% of Johnnic Communications’ media unit.

An Australian woman who stole a pet goat and was involved in slaughtering it in a mock Satanic ritual in a church, was ordered by a court on Monday to apologise to the church and the dead goat’s owners. Tracey Arnold (26) was drinking with friends at a Friday the 13th party in 2006 when she decided to steal the pet goat named ”Maddie”.
