Two large blasts aimed at a convoy of Ethiopian troops heading toward the capital prompted soldiers to open fire on Monday. At least two Somalis were shot to death, witnesses said. The explosions south of Mogadishu could be heard a kilometre away, and ”shook all the buildings nearby”, resident Mohamed Ahmed said.

The United States space shuttle Discovery successfully undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) early on Monday to begin a journey back to Earth, space officials said. After saying goodbye and closing the hatches, Discovery crew members smoothly sailed away from the ISS at 10.30am GMT.

African nations are failing to control tuberculosis and could be overwhelmed by drug resistant strains of the infectious lung disease, with dire implications for the war on HIV/Aids, a leading Aids activist said on Monday. ”The explosion of tuberculosis on the continent is combined with the explosion and advance of the HIV epidemic,” said Zackie Achmat of the Treatment Action Campaign.

A human rights panel on Monday implicated Kenyan police in the execution of nearly 500 men in the country during a months-long crackdown on the ultra-violent Mungiki gang. The state-run Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said the victims were executed by a single bullet between June and October.

Indonesia’s deadly Mount Kelud billowed thick smoke on Monday amid signs of a major eruption, while another volcano nearby sent clouds of ash raining down on towns and villages. At least one other of Indonesia’s approximately 100 active volcanoes was also smoking as well as firing out red-hot stones and lava.

Fire damaged five operating theatres at Coronation Hospital in Newclare, Johannesburg, on Monday, causing several patients to be moved to nearby hospitals, the provincial department of health said. Patients who require emergency medical operations were moved to Johannesburg and Chris Hani-Baragwanath hospitals.

South Africa’s AngloGold Ashanti said it expected a government inspection to be conducted on Monday at one of its larger mines, which was shut on Friday after a miner was killed in a rock-fall. AngloGold shut its TauTona mine after the worker died in the early hours of Friday.
