United States film and television writers started going on strike on Monday as last-minute talks aimed at averting the Writers Guild of America’s first strike in almost two decades collapsed. The strike is expected to shut down many sitcoms and send popular late-night talk shows immediately into reruns.

Olympique Lyon’s Czech forward Milan Baros was caught speeding at 268km/h in his Ferrari, a club source confirmed Friday. Local newspaper Le Progres quoted police as saying the former Liverpool player had broken the record for speeding for that French region, set by a motorcyclist who reached 246km/h.

Police in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) North Kivu province opened fire on refugees during a violent protest over food distributions on Monday, killing a child and wounding 11 civilians. Villagers driven from their homes three weeks ago by fighting between government soldiers and rebels had erected barricades in the town of Kiwanja.

China’s maiden lunar probe successfully entered the moon’s orbit on Monday, officials said, a critical step in its year-long mission to photograph and map the surface of the celestial body. Chang’e I blasted off on October 24, signalling China’s rising space ambitions and Beijing’s participation in a renewed race to explore the moon.

Shares of Citigroup rose 5% in their debut on the Tokyo bourse on Monday, a day after the United States bank’s head resigned to take responsibility for spiralling losses on subprime-related investments. Charles Prince stepped down after four years as Citigroup’s chief on Sunday after the bank said it may suffer an -billion write-down for subprime losses.

Johannesburg police arrested a man on Monday in connection with an armed robbery at a Pick ‘n Pay supermarket in Mulbarton over the weekend. Police spokesperson Captain Julia Claasen said the man was found in a ditch where he had been hiding since the robbery on Sunday evening.

Egypt’s ruling party gave ageing politician Safwat el-Sherif another term as party secretary general on Monday, ending speculation that President Hosni Mubarak’s son Gamal might take that position. Sherif (73) has been near the top of the National Democratic Party (NDP) since its foundation in 1977 and has been secretary general since 2002.

A German pensioner secretly cut down or shortened 122 trees in a publicly owned forest to give his holiday cottage a clear view of the Baltic Sea, police said on Thursday. The 70-year-old Hamburg resident told police he had felled 56 trees with a chainsaw and left only the bottom four metres of 66 others.

A fire set by inmates swept through a prison in a north-eastern Argentine city, killing at least 29 people, authorities said on Monday. Many of the deaths were caused by asphyxiation as inmates were overcome by smoke, said Ricardo Daives, Justice Minister for the Santiago del Estero province.

Cameroon’s soccer federation are refusing to accept Otto Pfister as their new coach, rejecting his appointment by the country’s sports ministry last week. Fecafoot president Mohamed Iya has told Sports Minister Augustin Edjoa that the federation would not sign a proposed contract with the 70-year-old German coach.
