Morkel helps SA to comfortable win

Albie Morkel hit three massive sixes off successive balls and then took two wickets as South Africa beat England by 19 runs in a Twenty20 World Championship Super Eight match at Newlands on Sunday. Morkel’s lower-order hitting enabled South Africa to score 154-8 after a stuttering top order performance.

OJ Simpson arrested in Vegas hotel break-in

Las Vegas police arrested former football star OJ Simpson on Sunday in connection with a hotel room break-in, CNN said. A source with the Las Vegas Police Department told CNN Simpson was taken into custody at the Palms hotel. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in June 1994.

Dozens killed in Thailand plane crash

A budget airliner filled with foreign tourists crashed on the Thai resort island of Phuket on Sunday, killing 88 people as it broke up and burst into flames while trying to land in heavy rain, officials said. The remaining 42 people on board the flight from Bangkok survived and were being treated in nearby hospitals for a variety of injuries, including burns.

Ajax scrape home against Cosmos

Ajax Cape Town’s Brazilian defender Edwardo Ferreira scored the lone goal in his side’s victory over Jomo Cosmos in a Premier Soccer League game at Newlands on Sunday. Ferreira was also a tower of strength in the Ajax defence, working well with Clayton Jagers, Bryce Moon and Brett Evans.

Tonga hang on to upset Samoa

Tonga, playing the final minutes two men down, broke a nine-match losing sequence to derail Samoa’s hopes of reaching the quarterfinals at the Rugby World Cup with a fighting 19-15 win on Sunday. The Tongan Sea Eagles followed up their opening 25-15 win over United States to remain unbeaten in the tournament and lie second in Pool A.

Zille almost in trouble … again

Cape Town mayor and Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille’s Sunday march against drugs almost landed her in trouble with the police again. Zille, who was leading a community march targeting at drug lords in Atlantis outside Cape Town, was denied permission to march in a street whose residents were said to be mostly drug lords.

Chiefs swagger but fail to beat SuperSport

SuperSport United held Kaizer Chiefs to a 0-0 draw in an entertaining Premier Soccer League game at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Sunday. Chiefs had the better chances and played with a swagger that had the hosts on the back foot for most of the game, but could not beat the superb Dennis Onyango in goal.

Fiji dream of quarters with Canada victory

Fiji beat Canada 29-16 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday as they sighted a return to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1987. The Pacific islanders moved into second place in Pool B behind Australia, piling the pressure on to Wales who they’ll meet in a winner-takes-all clash in Nantes on September 29, with the prize of a last-eight place at stake.
