Ashraful knocks Windies out of Twenty20

<a href="http://www.mg.co.za/specialreport.aspx?area=twenty20world_home"><img src="http://www.mg.co.za/ContentImages/318869/twenty20_icon2.jpg" align=left border=0></a>Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful smashed the fastest half-century in Twenty20 cricket on Wednesday to knock the West Indies out of the world championships. The 23-year-old dynamo pounded seven boundaries and three sixes in 61 off 27 balls as Bangladesh overtook the West Indian total of 164-8 with 12 deliveries to spare at the Wanderers.

Burger’s ban reduced to two matches

The Rugby World Cup appeal committee on Thursday reduced Springbok flanker Schalk Burger’s four-match suspension to two matches. This was announced following an appeal hearing by the committee into the incident where Burger tackled a Samoan player in the air during the Boks’ opening match on Sunday.

World’s Muslims celebrate start of holy month

Most of the world’s 1,2-billion Muslims celebrated the start of the holy month of Ramadan on Thursday as Indonesians prayed for the victims of a massive earthquake that rocked Sumatra island a day earlier. The start of Ramadan, the holiest month of the Muslim calendar, is traditionally determined by the sighting of a new crescent moon.

JSE drifts sideways, seen directionless

The JSE drifted sideways during the course of the morning on Thursday in directionless trade as it waited to see how Wall Street opened. At 11.59am, the all-share index added 0,18%, with resources up 0,59%, the platinum mining index flat (+0,03%) and the gold-mining index little changed (-0,04%).

SA current-account deficit lower

South Africa’s current-account deficit decreased to 6,5% of the gross domestic product in the second quarter of the year, down from 6,9% in the first, the South African Reserve Bank said on Thursday. This was mainly due to the raised demand for South African exports in the second quarter.

Mozambican arrested with corpse flesh

A Mozambican man was arrested in the central province of Manica after he was found in possession of human flesh barely two weeks after he was released from prison where he served time for similar charges. The man told police officers that he was unable to live without eating human flesh.

Curator finds missing Fidentia millions

The Cape High Court-appointed curators of the Fidentia Group have found money stolen from investors who entrusted their savings to companies in the organisation. Co-curator George Papadakis said: ”We know where every cent is and who has got it. Some have offered to repay; others are choosing to fight us.”

Oil eases after topping $80 on supply fears

Oil prices dipped on Thursday but held near the previous day’s record high above a barrel, as dealers watched a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico after a sharp fall in United States crude stocks. US crude traded 12 cents lower at ,79 a barrel by 8.39am GMT, after climbing ,68 on Wednesday, when it hit a record of ,18.
