Sri Lankan troops killed 11 Tamil Tiger rebels in a series of clashes in the island’s restive north and one soldier also died, the military said on Wednesday. Troops fought four separate engagements with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam fighters in the northern district of Vavuniya late on Tuesday.

The parents of a British girl who disappeared while on holiday in Portugual will launch a 24-hour hotline on Wednesday for information to help find their daughter. Kate and Gerry McCann were to go on Spanish television to urge people to call the hotline if they have any information about their four-year-old, Madeleine.

Gauteng has made significant strides in the eradication of the unhygienic and inhumane bucket sanitation system, local government provincial minister Qedaeni Mahlangu said on Wednesday. Mahlangu announced the achievement during a bucket eradication roadshow in the Slovoville informal settlement in Nigel.

A total of 54 miners were sheltering in emergency chambers underground after a fire broke out at an Australian gold mine on Wednesday. There were no reported injuries and mine officials said they were working to bring the miners to the surface.

South African pathologist Lorna Martin told the inquest into the death of Bob Woolmer that the former Pakistan cricket coach apparently died of natural causes and mistakes were made in his autopsy. Woolmer died in Jamaica on March 18, hours after he was found unconscious in his hotel room.

Ian Chappell has come out swinging over England legend Ian Botham’s claim that he decked the former Australian captain in a bar room brawl 30 years ago. Chappell disputed an anecdote in Botham’s autobiography Head On in which the former England all-rounder says he ”flattened” the Australian.

The Newcastle funeral service for South African reggae star Lucky Dube has been cancelled, spokespersons for the family said on Tuesday. ”The family wishes to respect [his] final wishes to have a small and dignified funeral,” they said in a statement.

Arsenal and Manchester United moved closer to a place in the next round of the Champions League on Tuesday with big wins that extended the English duo’s perfect starts. Arsenal beat visiting Slavia Prague 7-0 to equal the competition’s biggest win, while English champion United won at Dynamo Kiev 4-2.

Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti once bragged he could produce a work of art in just a night. But a major exhibition of his works at Paris’ George Pompidou shows that to be untrue. The show aims ”to put the visitor in the workshop, to show them Giacometti’s creative process and the perpetual progress of his work”.

When George Linardos was ordered to clear his diary to help dream up new business for Nokia, he imagined six weeks brainstorming on the terrace of a five-star hotel in the Caribbean. What he got was a pot of porridge every morning at a Spartan hotel hours from Finnish capital Helsinki, with forests and snow all around.
