‘Advocate Barbie’ trial delayed again

The trial of Cezanne Visser, also known as ”Advocate Barbie”, has once again been delayed because no judge was available to preside in the case. The defence and the state were only informed this week that no judge had been assigned to the case. Judge Khami Makhafola provisionally postponed Visser’s trial to October 12 to allow the state to arrange for the appointment of a judge.

AU: No threat of troop withdrawal from Darfur

The African Union denied on Tuesday that troop-contributing nations had threatened to pull their forces from a mission to Darfur after a rebel attack on an AU peacekeeping base. The AU says 10 soldiers were killed and 10 others wounded after the weekend raid — the worst assault on AU forces since 2004 when the 7 000-strong mission was deployed.

Pakistan struggle after Kallis brilliance

Pakistan will have to fight hard to save the first Test against South Africa after a masterly knock of 155 by Jacques Kallis put the tourists in command at the National Stadium in Karachi on Tuesday. At the close on the second day, Pakistan were 127-5 in reply to South Africa’s first innings total of 450, still needing a further 124 to avoid the follow-on.

UN: Climate will alter travel patterns

Global warming will produce stay-at-home tourists over the next few decades, radically altering travel patterns and threatening jobs and businesses in tourism-dependent countries, according to a stark assessment by United Nations experts. They said concerns about weather extremes and calls to reduce emissions-heavy air travel would make long-haul flights less attractive.

Decline in sales of new vehicles

Sales of new vehicles plunged over the past month, says the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa. Association members reported 50 084 new vehicles sold during September this year, compared with 57 599 sold during the same month the year before. The 13% drop was a ”significant decline”, the association said in a statement on Tuesday.

Symonds and Haddin set up Australia win

Andrew Symonds and Brad Haddin powered to 87 runs apiece to help Australia outplay India by 84 runs in the second one-dayer on Tuesday, avenging last month’s surprise Twenty20 World Championship semifinal defeat. Australia amassed 306-6 after being asked to bat first in their first full one-dayer since their return from a long break after winning a World Cup hat-trick in April.
