Amsterdam closes window on its red-light trade

Last week, Amsterdam announced that it is closing down one-third of its famed brothels. Within a matter of months, 52 of the iconic window displays that line the streets of the busy red-light district will disappear. In a deal worth â,¬26-million, officials will buy 18 buildings from Amsterdam’s Emperor of Sex and close down the ”windows”.

‘Tall and black’ vs ‘white and colonial’

”Mugabe stands very tall and black,” boasted Herald columnist Nathaniel Manheru in Zimbabwe on Saturday. ”Brown stands white and colonial.” It was a reminder of the intensity of the diplomatic row that has erupted over British Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s decision to boycott a Europe-Africa summit if Mugabe shows up.

Arrows show their mettle against Pirates

Golden Arrows beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Saturday. There was no score at half-time. Amazulu registered their second win of the PSL season when they beat Black Leopards 2-1 in scorching heat at Giyani Stadium, Thohoyandou.

Elephants trample Eagles in George

In a shock result in a Currie Cup first-division game at Outeniqua Park in George on Saturday, the Eastern Province Mighty Elephants sprang a surprise when they defeated the Eagles 34-17. In Wellington, Griquas beat the Boland Cavaliers 57-22, and the Lions outplayed the Valke 61-30 in Johannesburg.
