Kemp, Morkel lead SA to comfortable win

Justin Kemp blasted 89 not out off 56 balls after Morne Morkel claimed 4-17 as South Africa thrashed New Zealand by six wickets in the Twenty20 World Championship on Wednesday. Graeme Smith’s home team restricted the Kiwis to 153-8 after giving them first strike at Kingsmead and then knocked off the modest target with five balls to spare.

Dennis not on talking terms with Alonso

McLaren boss Ron Dennis has not been on speaking terms with Formula One champion Fernando Alonso since last month’s Hungarian Grand Prix, it emerged on Wednesday. In a transcript of a ‘spy hearing’ that last Thursday, Dennis revealed the extent of the rift with a driver he described as a ”remarkable recluse”.

Sexual harassment on farms is on the increase and the victims are getting younger, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) heard on Wednesday. This was according to Claudia Lopes from Rural Education Awareness and Community Health (Reach), presenting at public hearings on the effectiveness of legislative and policy changes in farming communities.

Beirut car bomb kills at least five

A car bomb exploded in the Christian eastern part of Beirut on Wednesday, killing at least five people and wounding four in an attack that may have targeted a political figure, security sources said. Television footage showed several cars on fire and bodies being carried away from the scene.

Jo’burg taxi operators blame registrar for violence

Taxi operators on Wednesday blamed the registrar for public transport in Gauteng for violence that erupted between two taxi groups vying for the Clearwater Mall route west of Johannesburg. The Faraday Taxi Association and the Dobsonville, Roodepoort, Leratong, Johannesburg Taxi Association said the registrar had failed to decide who could use the route.

Iran warns it could bomb Israel if attacked

Iran on Wednesday said the military has drawn up a plan under which its fighter jets could bomb Israel if the Jewish state launched a military attack against the Islamic republic over its atomic drive. ”Iranian bombers can carry out an attack in retaliation against Israeli soil,” deputy air force commander Mohammad Alavi said, quoted by the Fars news agency.
