South African police traded gunfire with angry crowds on Sunday as they arrested 180 suspects in two operations in a crackdown on crime including murder and drug-trafficking, state-run media said. Police returned fire after they were shot at from a crowd of onlookers during an operation in which 25 people were arrested for public violence at Mankweng in Limpopo, it was reported.

British rally driver Colin McRae and two children — including his five-year-old son — were among the four passengers killed in a helicopter crash this weekend in Scotland, police said on Sunday. Strathclyde Police confirmed that the 39-year-old driver, his son Johnny, and two family friends were killed in the incident in Lanark, Scotland, on Saturday afternoon.

Svetlana Kuznetsova saved two match points in the second set tiebreaker before beating Francesca Schiavone 4-6 7-6 7-5 in the first reverse singles on Sunday to give Russia their third Fed Cup title in four years. A South African Communist Party (SACP) task team set up to investigate a controversial alleged donation by businessman Charles Modise has found no credible evidence that the donation ever existed, the party said on Sunday. The SACP said its political bureau took a ”dim view” of the conduct of Willie Madisha in the way he had handled the controversy.

Zimbabwe’s main labour union will go ahead with a two-day strike next week despite government signals the wage freeze that triggered the protest would be relaxed, a top labour official said on Sunday. Colin McRae, who died in a tragic helicopter crash alongside his five-year-old son Johnny on September 15, was born with his foot firmly on the accelerator. Rallying, and indeed daredevil pursuits, was in the blood for McRae, who was born in Lanark in southern Scotland on August 5 1968. His father Jimmy was a five-time British rally champion. His brother Alister is also former champion.
