The porting experience

After comparing packages, I discovered that I could save R40 a month by porting to MTN. Although this does not sound like a lot, over a two-year contract I will save R960. As my Vodacom contract was about to end, I decided to port. I had to complete a new application form, with all the Fica requirements, which was a real hassle. At that point, I wondered whether it would not have been easier to stick with my current provider.

Younger people will face the biggest financial losses if they do not have enough insurance to replace their income should they become disabled or ill — simply because they have a longer life span during which they need to draw an income. When we are in the prime of our youth we might feel invincible, but the reality is that 20% of disability claims are a result of car accidents, which tend to affect younger people.

UN: World hit by record extreme weather in 2007

The world has experienced record extreme weather conditions including unusual floods, heatwaves, storms and cold snaps since the beginning of the year, the United Nations weather agency said on Tuesday. Preliminary observations also indicated that global land-surface temperatures in January and April reached the highest levels recorded for those months.

Malawi cops raid home of judge in budget row

Malawi police and anti-corruption authorities have raided the house of a judge who ruled against President Bingu wa Mutharika in a row with the opposition over the country’s budget. Fahad Assani, a lawyer for High Court Judge Joseph Mwanyungwe, told Reuters police and members of the Anti-Corruption Bureau raided the judge’s house on Monday night.

The Zambian government has reiterated its warning to civic groups to drop their plans to stage violent protests during next week’s meeting of regional leaders. The government said in a statement that it had received reports that the groups were planning to hold protests during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) 27th summit.

ICC: Sudan must hand over Darfur fugitives

The Sudanese government must hand over for trial the man accused of masterminding the Darfur massacre or risk becoming a pariah nation, the International Criminal Court (ICC) chief prosecutor said on Tuesday. Luis Moreno-Ocampo said any peace deal would have to respect international law and warrants for the arrest of Sudanese Minister Ahmad Harun.

Manto concerned over cost of new-generation ARVs

New-generation antiretroviral (ARV) drugs could cost 500% more than those now being dispensed by the Health Department, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said on Tuesday. Speaking at the opening of the Women in Partnership against Aids, Tshabalala-Msimang said: ”The reduction of prices of medicines is a critical concern.”
