Govt launches industrial policy framework

It would be dangerous for the government to stay out of the South African economy, taking into account the country’s history, Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mpahlwa said on Thursday. Speaking at the launch of the National Industrial Policy Framework, Mpahlwa said the plan would help the government address some of the legacies in the economy.

Police task teams to probe ATM bombings

Task teams have been established to investigate bomb attacks on ATMs in every province where they have taken place, police said on Thursday. National police spokesperson Superintendent Ronnie Naidoo said each province had its own task team to investigate the ATM bombings. The task teams were coordinated at national level, he said.

African Union mulls more troops for Darfur

The African Union met Thursday to encourage member states to put more troops into the Darfur peacekeeping mission approved by the United Nations Security Council. Ambassadors to the pan-African body gathered at its Addis Ababa headquarters to discuss the force, which faces the daunting task of stabilising the war-torn western Sudanese region.

Powerful typhoon slams into Japan

A powerful typhoon slammed into southern Japan on Thursday, injuring three people, disrupting air and land traffic and cutting power to thousands of houses. Packing winds of up to 144km/h and bringing heavy rains, typhoon Usagi landed on the coast of Kyushu Island shortly before 6pm local time from the Pacific, the meteorological agency said.

Dozens killed in Darfur tribal fighting

At least 65 people have been killed in renewed tribal clashes in Sudan’s Darfur, a tribal leader said on Thursday, two days after the United Nations approved a massive peacekeeping force for the war-wracked region. The fighting, in which another 25 people were wounded, took place in Southern Darfur on Tuesday.

Russian sub reaches Arctic seabed in North Pole bid

A Russian submersible reached the bottom of the Arctic Ocean on Thursday in a mission to symbolically claim the resource-rich region by planting a flag on the seabed under the North Pole, Russian media reported. Two Russian submersibles started their dive from an ice hole near the North Pole and dived about 4 261m, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

JSE up, but well off best levels

The JSE was in positive territory at midday on Thursday, but off its best levels reached earlier in the morning. The all-share was last up 60 points after having been up 304 points at one stage. At 12pm, the JSE all-share index gained 0,22%, with the resources and platinum indices flat (up 0,03% and -0,04% respectively), and the gold-mining index slipping 0,84%.
