Iron Age and Bushmen artefacts; remnants of Bantu peoples, colonials, gold diggers; apartheid resistance; and the political maturing and place of residence of the country’s most esteemed citizen, Nelson Mandela, and icons such as Mahatma Gandhi.

For the past few years I have tried to understand what makes me so fear the country called the United Kingdom. London, that great multicultural city leaves me incoherent with anger sometimes, confused many times. Many of my friends love the place. I used to, but, over the years, I have found myself wanting to be there less and less.

Demining in Mozambique will soon get a boost with the arrival of more specially trained rats, local reports said on Thursday. Radio Mozambique said the international demining company Apopo will soon receive an additional 15 demining rats to add to its current furry workforce of 25.

A Nigerian governor has sacked the entire 34 000-strong workforce in his state for refusing to heed a call to suspend their one-month-old strike over pay, a government spokesperson said Thursday. Public-sector workers in the south-western state of Oyo launched the industrial action last month.

Zimbabwe’s Parliament on Thursday passed a compromise Bill giving veteran President Robert Mugabe room to pick a successor after the measure was watered down to curb his powers to appoint legislators. The constitutional Bill will enable Parliament to choose a successor if an incumbent president fails to finish his term.

The controversial Constitution 13th Amendment Bill was passed in the National Assembly on Thursday, despite opposition from the Democratic Alliance and the Inkatha Freedom Party, among others. The Bill seeks to realign certain provincial borders to avoid municipal boundaries straddling them.
