Gunmen killed two police officers in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, where the embattled transitional government is facing a deadly insurgency, police said on Friday. The pair were killed overnight when insurgents ambushed a police patrol in northern Mogadishu’s Huriwa district, one of the most volatile zones in the lawless city, said police officer Abdulwahid Mohamed.

Most professional football teams are making unemployment insurance fund (UIF) payments but they are still contravening the Act, the Labour Department said on Friday. Department spokesperson Kgomotso Sebetso said 90% of employers were submitting a bulk sum in payments each month but not the breakdown of the players’ details.

Renegade Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) General Laurent Nkunda said on Friday the Congolese army had attacked his position, breaking a fragile ceasefire negotiated by United Nations mediators in eastern DRC. ”I have told Monuc [the United Nations mission in DRC] that we were attacked this morning [Friday],” Nkunda said.

The mother of missing British girl Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in Portugal four months ago, will be formally declared a suspect on Friday, a spokesperson for the family said. The sudden shift in the investigation came after authorities received forensic evidence from the holiday apartment in the Algarve, where four-year-old Madeleine vanished on May 3.

Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad is not yet pursuing his opinion that the government should pull advertising from the Sunday Times, presidential spokesperson Mukhoni Ratshitanga said on Friday. He said that Pahad was only expressing a personal view and that it was not government policy.

The JSE all-share index gave up earlier gains of just over 0,5%, trading at just 0,21% in the black shortly before midday on Friday. "It hasn’t been an exciting day, we are up slightly. We initially saw gold stocks up on the stronger gold price, which supported the rest of the market," said a local trader.

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CZC) has described as ”scandalous” the decision by Zimbabwe to spend up to -million on sprucing up hotels and its infrastructure to cash in on the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. ”It’s a tragedy to try to create world-class facilities in a situation of misery,” CZC spokesperson Elinor Sisulu said.
