AltX has performed spectacularly in the past year with a return of 107%. The AltX index has performed much better than the Fledglings and Small Cap indices, which are up 42,8% and 46,4% respectively for the past 12 months. All the small cap guys have beaten the pants off the JSE Top 40, which is up 23,4%.

Men are five times more likely to commit suicide than women, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group said on Monday, World Suicide Day. The World Health Organisation (WHO), meanwhile, estimates that on average almost 3 000 people commit suicide every day.

The ruling party in Zimbabwe has agreed to enforce age limits for its powerful youth wing in what analysts say may be a move to rein in over-ambitious leaders embroiled in the Zanu-PF’s messy succession debate, it emerged on Monday. Leaders of Zanu-PF’s youth wing must now not be older than 30 years, according to a report in Herald newspaper.

The terrorist who on Saturday apparently helped drive a truck loaded with explosives into a marine barracks in the eastern Algerian city of Dellys and detonate it, killing 30 people and injuring 47, was only 15 years old, the daily El Watan reported on Monday.

The JSE continued to hold on to its earlier gains by noon on Monday as miners gained speed after a rally in the gold and platinum price. Shortly before midday, the rand was bid at 7,19 to the United States dollar from 7,25 when the JSE closed on Friday, while gold was quoted at $703,75 a troy ounce from $703 at the JSE’s last close.

Somalia’s opposition leaders predicted on Monday that a further surge in an Islamist-led insurgency in the capital, Mogadishu, could defeat Ethiopian troops supporting the government there within two months. "The liberation forces are gaining strength day after day," said Zakariya Mahamud Abdi, spokesperson of a congress in Eritrea’s capital, Asmara.

Uganda’s army denied a report on Monday that its troops were massing on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), despite a deal on the weekend meant to reduce tensions. United Nations-sponsored Radio Okapi in eastern DRC quoted military sources as saying Ugandan soldiers had set up camp at several points along the tense frontier.
