Sudan on Monday rejected the legitimacy of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in pressing charges over the conflict in Darfur. ”The position of Sudan is that this court has no jurisdiction when it comes to trying Sudanese,” said Minister of Justice Mohammed Ali al-Mardhi.

Senegal’s veteran President Abdoulaye Wade on Monday claimed he had won a second mandate in Sunday’s presidential vote, but his assertion was challenged by opponents. No official results had been published hours after polling stations closed, and Wade’s opponents described his victory claim as a ”bluff”.

Despite protests from environmental organisations, Japanese fishermen are currently conducting an annual dolphin hunt that kills thousands of the aquatic mammals. Hideki Moronuki, spokesperson for the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry, said between 16 000 to 17 000 dolphins are killed.

At least 11 people died and more than 100 people were injured at an annual spring festival in eastern Pakistan celebrated with the flying of thousands of colourful kites, officials said on Monday. The deaths and injuries were caused by stray bullets, sharpened kite-strings, electrocution and people falling off rooftops.

Wallaby coach John Connolly said on Monday he is seriously concerned about the poor start to the Super 14 season by the four Australian teams in World Cup year. Australian teams — Western Force, ACT Brumbies, NSW Waratahs and Queensland Reds — are languishing near the bottom of the Super 14 ladder, sitting in seventh, eighth, 11th and 13th positions.

Silver Stars beat Jomo Cosmos 2 -0 in a heated Absa Cup game to qualify for the last 16 played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday. Stars led 2-0 at halftime. Stars put their dismal Premier Soccer League form behind them and were in control of the game throughout.

Australian umpire Darrell Hair has withdrawn his racial discrimination case against Pakistan, the country’s cricket board said on Monday. ”We have been informed that Hair has withdrawn his case of racial discrimination against us and it doesn’t surprises us because he couldn’t sue us for what happened to him,” Pakistan Cricket Board director of operations Salim Altaf said.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson defeated US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy of Australia two and one on Sunday to win the -million World Golf Championships (WGC) Accenture Match-Play Championship. Stenson became just the second European to win the elite event and denied Ogilvy’s bid to join Tiger Woods as a back-to-back winner of the tournament.
