Manuel calls for review of BEE

South Africa’s policy of black economic empowerment (BEE) is flawed and in need of review, the country’s finance minister said in an interview published on Tuesday. Speaking to the Financial Times, Trevor Manuel said that the legislation, clarified two years ago, had been abused.

Mugabe’s victims twice over

The 27-year-old Bulawayo street trader was made a non-person as a small boy on the day that Robert Mugabe’s troops killed his parents, just two of about 20 000 men and women slaughtered by the Zimbabwean army.

Shia demand withdrawal of foreign troops

Wrapped in the Iraqi flag and chanting anti-American slogans, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Shia snaked into the holy city of Najaf on Monday for a protest rally to mark the fourth anniversary of the toppling of Saddam Hussein and to demand the ejection from Iraq of United States and British troops.

Property confidence is rising

Property owners will be relieved to know that there has been a pick-up in property activity over the past quarter, according to the latest FNB residential property barometer. The index, which gauges property activity through 150 property agents, has been declining since the second quarter of last year as a direct result of interest rate hikes last year.
