Italy, England triumph in Euro 2008 qualifiers

Italy moved back into the chase for a spot at next year’s European Championship, beating Scotland 2-0 on Wednesday as England also played themselves back into contention by downing Andorra 3-0. England’s win, however, will do little to ease the pressure on coach Steve McClaren, who had been winless in five straight games before facing a team with only one competitive victory.

JSE remains firmer on world markets

The JSE remained firmer at noon on Thursday, tracking overseas markets and firm Dow futures indicating a strong opening on the United States equities market. At 12pm, the all-share index was off 0,70%. Resources were 0,80% better; the gold- and platinum-mining indices added 0,27% and 1,10% respectively.

SABMiller to invest $170m in new Russian brewery

Global brewing giant SABMiller’s Russian operations are to invest approximately $$170-million in the construction of a new brewery outside the city of Ulyanovsk, which is located about 1 000km east of Moscow. Ulyanovsk, which lies on the Volga River, enjoys good road and rail links and is home to a number of raw-material suppliers.

Chelsea clamps down on celery-throwers

Chelsea have banned three of their fans after they were caught throwing celery during the team’s FA Cup win at Tottenham Hotspur, the Premier League champions said Tuesday. Two of them were arrested for throwing celery during the quarterfinal replay on March 19, while a third was spotted throwing the vegetable and later identified.

Researchers track SA’s biltong hunters

Researchers at the North West University have compiled a profile on biltong hunters in a study of the economic impact of biltong hunting in South Africa. About 200 000 hunters set off each year with biltong as their target, which is far greater than the number of trophy hunters who visit the country.

Red-light districts for 2010 Soccer World Cup?

The host cities for the 2010 Soccer World Cup should have dedicated red-light districts, police Deputy National Commissioner Andre Pruis said on Thursday. Pruis repeated calls made by National Commissioner Jackie Selebi who asked the National Assembly to give serious thought on what to do about prostitution and drinking in public.

Mozambique to crack down on street vendors

Mozambique’s health ministry is planning to implement legislation that would prohibit vendors from selling food on the streets in major cities in order to curb the outbreak of diseases. The legislation would be implemented in the country’s major cities of Maputo, Beira and Nampula, according to the Health Ministry.
