Cyclone leaves two dead on Madagascar

Two people were killed and thousands left homeless when a ruinous cyclone smashed the northern coast of Madagascar this week, authorities said on Saturday. Cyclone Indlala left a trail of devastation in its wake on Thursday, damaging buildings and infrastructure on the Indian Ocean island.

Raikkonen dominates Australian Grand Prix

Kimi Raikkonen showed he’s the man to step into Michael Schumacher’s shoes at Ferrari, winning his first race with his new team at Sunday’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Raikkonen has already beaten a Schumacher mark at the Italian team. The German had to wait until his seventh race to notch his first win with Ferrari.

Ireland clinch upset World Cup victory

Ireland gave their countrymen a St Patrick’s Day to remember when they clinched a sensational three-wicket victory over Pakistan to send the former champions crashing out of the Cricket World Cup at Sabina Park on Saturday in Jamaica. Chasing a revised target of 128 from 47 overs, Ireland held their nerve to hit the jackpot.

‘Emergency law’ on streets of Zim

An unofficial state of emergency has been imposed on Zimbabwe by President Robert Mugabe, with police beating people who venture on to the streets after dark and breaking up gatherings as small as four people, residents report. Government gunmen on Saturday seized the body of an opposition activist to prevent his burial from becoming a focal point for the opposition.

Stars, United, Benoni move up in Absa Cup

Silver Stars went into the quarterfinals of the Absa Cup when they narrowly beat Ajax Cape Town by a 1-0 score in the fifth minute. Supersport United beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals too, and Benoni Premier United qualified as well when they beat Mvela League Bay United 2-1.
