Bomber blows himself up at army checkpoint

A suicide bomber driving an oil truck blew himself up after he was stopped at a checkpoint near an Iraqi army headquarters on Wednesday, wounding nine soldiers. The attacker apparently planned to drive the truck into the compound in Muqdadiyah, but guards stopped him at the checkpoint about 100m away.

Woman tells court how she was driven to murder

A desperate need to raise money for her children’s education drove Desiree Oberholzer to agree to a plan to kill Icelandic national Gisli Thorkelsson, she told the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday. She said murder-accused Willie Theron told her of the plan after she told him that she was resorting to prostitution to raise money.

Record-chasing Els tries to ignore Woods factor

Ernie Els says he must ignore the Tiger Woods factor if he is to harbour realistic hopes of securing an unprecedented fourth Dubai Desert Classic trophy this week. ”He is so far ahead of me right now but I have got new goals and I want to stay focused on them,” the 37-year-old South African told reporters on the eve of the European Tour event.

Further disarray in England camp

England’s lack of cohesion was in the spotlight again on Wednesday after wicketkeeper Paul Nixon took aim at captain Andrew Flintoff’s claims about their fielding in Australia. Nixon also contradicted coach Duncan Fletcher’s assertion that the players had been training too hard, underlining the disarray in the England side during their calamitous tour down under.

Pistol Pete to make debut on senior tour

Pete Sampras, who won a record 14 Grand Slam singles titles, will play his first senior tennis event in Boston next May and might compete in other Champions Series events, the tour announced on Tuesday. The 35-year-old legend will play in the Champions Cup, and joins a one-year-old circuit for top names aged 30 and over.

Ronaldo bids farewell to Madrid

Ronaldo’s farewell to Real Madrid didn’t include any fond words for coach Fabio Capello. The World Cup’s all-time leading scorer left Madrid for AC Milan on Tuesday, returning to Italy’s Serie A for a reported â,¬7,5-million transfer fee. The 30-year-old Brazil striker joined Milan until 2008 — the same length as the remainder of his contract at Madrid.

Gauteng Business Barometer falls in December

The Gauteng Business Barometer (GBB) slipped by 6,2% in December to 145 index points from 154 index points in November. The index is also 4,8% lower than in December 2005, when it stood at 152 index points. The GBB is a unique provincial index that measures business activity in various economic sectors in Gauteng.

British police arrest eight in anti-terrorism raids

British police carried out a major nationwide anti-terrorism operation on Wednesday, arresting eight people in a series of dawn raids which media reports said had thwarted a significant planned attack. Detectives said the people were arrested at addresses across the city of Birmingham on ”suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism”.
