Rand, commodity link not a simple one

Mark Mobius, who oversees $30-billion in emerging-market equities at Templeton Asset Management, told I-Net Bridge on Monday that the relationship between the rand and commodities was not a simple one and that the key to reducing pressure on the balance of payments for a country was to add value to their commodities.

Govt: We didn’t block peer review

The South African government has strongly denied that it intervened on Sunday to prevent discussion by the Africa Union of a report that criticises the crime rate in this country, the media reported on Monday. The report of the Africa Peer Review Mechanism on South Africa was not tabled before the AU’s heads of state as planned.

Modikwa strike continues

About 2 000 Modikwa Platinum Mine workers gathered at the entrance of the Limpopo mine on Monday morning as the strike over a race dispute continued. National Union of Mineworkers spokesperson Onis Serothwane said union leadership will meet with their members on Monday to ”reconsolidate their mandate”.

US offers air support for Somali peace mission

The United States is ready to contribute air support to an African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, a leading official said on Monday. US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer said that she had made the offer during talks on the sidelines of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa with the head of the AU Commission, Alpha Oumar Konare.

Mauger coup for Leicester

All Black inside centre Aaron Mauger will leave New Zealand rugby after the World Cup to play for Leicester in England, he announced on Monday. He will play for the Canterbury Crusaders in the Super 14 competition this year before taking up a contract for two-and-a half-years with the Tigers in December.

England’s injury woes continue

England are again set to be without three of their key players for the crunch triangular one-day series clash with New Zealand on Tuesday. Defeat will almost certainly end England’s hopes of reaching the tri-series finals to cap a disastrous tour, and they look to be missing captain Michael Vaughan as well as opening bowlers James Anderson and Jon Lewis.
