Israeli President Moshe Katsav faced growing pressure on Wednesday to resign after prosecutors announced they intended to charge him with rape and other sexual offences against female employees. Katsav, who has denied any wrongdoing, will hold a news conference later on Wednesday, his office said.

The role of the match referee will come under scrutiny during an International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executives’ committee meeting in the United Arab Emirates later this week. The ICC’s executive board recommended last November that a paper be prepared following the Oval Test fiasco when umpires Darrell Hair and Billy Doctrove decided Pakistan had forfeited the match against England.

Award-winning Tsotsi star Presley Chweneyagae appeared briefly in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday when his case was postponed to February 27. His lawyer, Shane Lowley, asked the magistrate for the postponement on the grounds that the defence had no documentation and statements to work with as his client was arrested the previous day.

The JSE remained rampant in noon trade on Wednesday, having roared to a record high on the back of higher commodity prices and positive world markets. By 12.11pm, the all share index was up 1,13% at 25 386,79 after reaching a record high of 25 438,49.

South African media company Naspers has acquired a 30% minority stake in Russian internet company Mail.ru for $165-million. The shares have been acquired from Digital Sky Technologies and Tiger Global Management, who remain shareholders of the company, Naspers said in a statement late on Tuesday.
