Protesters clash with police at G20 meeting

Protests against a summit of the world’s financial leaders in Melbourne turned violent on Saturday when activists overturned barricades, pelted police with bottles and smashed a police riot truck. Police locked down several blocks of Australia’s second biggest city to stop protesters reaching the meeting of the group of 20 (G20) economic powers.

Nine-try Wales warm up for All Blacks in style

Wales ran in nine tries to crush Canada 61-26 at the Millennium Stadium on Friday and gain a confidence booster ahead of their testing clash with the All Blacks next week. The Welsh overcame the loss of centre Gavin Henson, who withdrew just before kick-off with an infected toe, to clinch a win that would still have left coach Gareth Jenkins with plenty to think about.

Wallaby Cannon not ready to fire

Two-time world champions Australia were hit late on Friday by the withdrawal of 2003 World Cup finalist hooker Brendan Cannon from their starting XV for the one-off Test on Sunday against Ireland after he failed to recover from a neck injury. Wallaby coach John Connolly said that the 33-year-old 42-times capped Western Force star had not satisfied the medical team that he was fit enough.

World Toilet Day seeks clean restrooms

Cut-price toilet paper, brushes and detergent are on sale to help promote clean restrooms as part of World Toilet Day on Sunday, the campaign organizer said on Saturday. It is the fifth annual World Toilet Day, organised by the Singapore-based non-profit World Toilet Organisation, which lobbies for better toilet standards in developed and developing countries.

Leaders tackle trade, North Korea at Apec summit

United States President George Bush on Saturday kept the pressure on North Korea as he held a flurry of bilateral talks with key world leaders before heading into an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit focused on free trade. Bush, China’s Hu Jintao, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were to convene on Saturday afternoon.

PlayStation mayhem in the US

A shooting. A stabbing. A beating. A hold-up. Friday’s release of the new PlayStation 3 gaming console led to several violent incidents across the United States. In Connecticut, two armed men tried to rob a line of people waiting to buy the console early on Friday and shot one who refused to give up the money, authorities said.

UN: Nato cannot defeat Taliban by force

Nato ”cannot win” the fight against the Taliban alone and will have to train Afghan forces to do the job, the United Nation’s top official in the country warned on Friday. ”At the moment Nato has a very optimistic assessment. They think they can win the war,” warned Tom Koenigs, the diplomat heading the UN mission in Afghanistan. ”But there is no quick fix.”
