Cosatu: Mboweni remarks irresponsible

Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni was criticised by both government and trade unions on Tuesday for his recent condemnation of government’s decision to restrict clothing and textile imports from China. President Thabo Mbeki and several government ministers met trade union leaders in Pretoria, where the quotas on clothing and textile imports from China were discussed.

Zim torture allegations to be probed

A Zimbabwean court on Tuesday ordered a probe into allegations that labour union leaders were tortured by police while in custody awaiting trail for attempting to protest against President Robert Mugabe’s rule. Harare magistrate William Bhila ordered an investigation into claims that leaders of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions were beaten up in police custody.

US, UK warn of sanctions against Iran

The United States and the United Kingdom said on Tuesday Iran could soon face sanctions because it showed no sign of halting sensitive nuclear work, while the European Union said the latest talks had been helpful but had brought no breakthrough. A senior Iranian atomic official said suspending uranium enrichment would not solve the nuclear stand-off.

N7 bridge in Cape Town closed

Repairs to the N7 bridge between the N1 and Frans Conradie Drive in Cape Town will take several months and the bridge will remain closed for at least the next 24 hours, a city official said on Tuesday. Structural supports are being put in place to allow for traffic on the bridge’s eastern span, acting media manager Charles Cooper said in a statement.

Ritual murders attract attention in Limpopo

The Limpopo legislature is to host a public hearing on ritual murders in the province, an official said on Tuesday. ”The ritual murders in the province have attracted the attention of the province’s lawmakers,” Limpopo legislature spokesperson Kenny Mathivha said. The hearing would be held at the Tshixwadza soccer ground in Mutale, Vhembe, on Saturday morning.

Agencies flee refugee camp in Darfur clashes

Fierce clashes between African groups in south Darfur have left up to 40 people dead and prompted foreign aid workers to abandon Greida, one of the world’s largest camps for displaced people. Fighters loyal to the Justice and Equality Movement, which refused to sign a peace deal in May, used mortars and machine guns to attack a faction of the Sudan Liberation Army which had accepted the deal.

Lebanese army units deployed on Monday in border villages vacated by Israeli forces to take control along with United Nations peacekeepers of virtually all of south Lebanon, a Hezbollah stronghold for a decade. Lebanon demanded Israel pull out from the Lebanese part of the village of Ghajar, warning of ”trouble” if it failed to do so.
