JSE takes a breather, golds weigh

After ending on a record high on Monday, the JSE was taking a breather on Tuesday, weighed down by weaker metals prices and a firmer rand. By noon, the all-share index was down 1,18%, due largely to a 3,33% fall in the gold-mining index, a 2,16% retreat in the resources index and a 1,74% decline in the platinum-mining index.

Africa’s aid billions wasted

More than 120-million Africans face starvation because much of the £3-billion (,6-billion) in aid spent each year to help them is wasted, an aid organisation said on Tuesday. International aid arrives too late, is targeted at the wrong things and is usually only a short term measure that doesn’t tackle the root cause of hunger said humanitarian aid organisation Care International UK.

Australia’s iconic ‘Tree of Knowledge’ poisoned

Australia’s heritage-listed "Tree of Knowledge", a 200-year-old ghost gum known as the birthplace of the centre-left Labour Party, has died after being poisoned, a party official said on Tuesday. The tree, which stands opposite a hotel in the centre of the small town of Barcaldine in the north-eastern state of Queensland, was the meeting place for sheep shearers during a landmark strike in 1891.

Audi says the Q7 arrived late on the luxury SUV scene simply because it’s a small brand that has been concentrating on growing brand awareness and making a success of its established products.

S40: sticky but sexy

The new Volvo S40 2,0litre replaces the 1,8-litre as the entry-level model in the S40 range, and it makes a bold entry at a competitive price. Driving the 2,0-litre, I could see why the S40 won the Car of the Year competition last year — it is easy on the eye and has a refined presence, with everything from the chiselled bonnet to the chunky rear lights combining to make an attractive vehicle.

Oh (mis)behave!

One of the first James Bond movies I remember watching as a child is Goldfinger. Sean Connery (the quintessential Bond) played the as-slick-as-a-politician-turned-BEE-millionaire secret agent 007 for British intelligence agency MI6. The movie featured the first in a series of Bond girls with daft names (Pussy Galore), but, more importantly, it featured Bond’s Aston Martin DB5.

Built for performance

The BMW Z4 M Coupé is the kind of car that makes you realise that there are those among us (guys and girls), who have an extremist streak that makes them push the limits of recreation beyond reason. The Z4 M is a slick-looking two-seater sports car that feels about as comfortable as bouncing around on a pogo stick.
