Iran told the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, last weekend that it is prepared to discuss suspending its uranium enrichment programme, a French foreign ministry spokesperson confirmed on Friday. Solana met Iranian chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani in Vienna on Saturday and Sunday.

South Africa is owed billions of rands in industrial participation agreements signed with international arms suppliers, and the government should explain why this investment has not happened, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon said on Friday. The agreements, termed ”offsets”, were mooted as a primary motive for the arms deal, he said.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s alma mater said on Friday it is launching an internet archive with thousands of documents and audio tapes on the life of the South African Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The £4,5-million project will provide a free, interactive digital resource about his humanitarian teachings and South Africa’s struggle for democracy, King’s College said.

Yemen foiled two suicide attacks on its oil and gas facilities on Friday, days after al-Qaeda urged Muslims to target Western interests, especially oil installations. The Interior Ministry said four bombers were killed when security forces blew up four rigged cars at dawn before they reached their targets. A guard was also killed.

The United Nations could face ”defiance” from member states if it does not reform to give broader representation to the world’s people, South African President Thabo Mbeki said on Friday. The South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers’ Union (Saccawu) has threatened to intensify its strike at Shoprite Checkers. ”We [Saccawu leadership] will meet tomorrow [Saturday] to discuss the way forward,” national secretary Thoko Mchunu said on Friday.

A committee tasked with probing divisions within Cosatu will present its findings to the federation’s top leaders at a specially convened meeting on Friday. The committee was constituted last month by Cosatu’s national office bearers. Meanwhile, it is understood that most Cosatu affiliates have withheld their nominations to re-elect president Willie Madisha to his post.

Four people were confirmed dead on Friday and dozens more were missing after a copper mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). About 50 workers are believed to have been in the mine at the time of the accident, French-language radio station RFI reported, adding that 13 are known to have survived.

The Mail & Guardian will ”vigorously” contest any court order barring publication of an article on MTN chief executive officer Maanda Manyatshe, the newspaper’s editor, Ferial Haffajee, said on Friday. ”The M&G is concerned that dangerous precedent could be set should procedure be exploited to obtain de facto gags, even when the merits have not been argued,” she said.
