Frozen-chicken scam dies for NZ hearse drivers

Hundreds of New Zealand motorists who claimed their vehicles were hearses so they could pay reduced registration fees face prosecution. The scam came to light last month when a woman claimed on talk-back radio that she and her friends registered their vehicles as hearses because they carried frozen chickens home from the supermarket.

The phrase ”window shopping” was never meant to be taken so literally. But New Yorkers whose attention is caught by the displays at one of Ralph Lauren’s Manhattan stores can now buy clothes without entering the premises, using a touch-screen system on the window.

AOL confesses security ‘screw-up’

America On Line (AOL) admitted to ”a screw-up” on Tuesday that resulted in 20-million search inquiries by more than half-a-million subscribers going public. There were fears that identities could be discovered from the searches, and some bloggers were said to have copied the information before it was taken down.

U2 inspire Irish ire by avoiding tax

Bono may be celebrated for browbeating world leaders into funding debt relief for developing countries, but his Irish rock band are facing criticism for switching their financial affairs overseas to avoid paying higher taxes. Irish politicians have expressed surprise at U2’s decision to move part of its operation from Ireland to Amsterdam.

Israel isolates town with threat to traffic

Israeli aircraft dropped leaflets over Tyre on Tuesday morning, warning people not to use vehicles south of the Litani River and heightening the city’s sense of isolation. All roads north and south of the port city have been cut by bombing in the past few days and Israeli authorities have refused permission for any ships to dock.
