SA population estimate: 47,4-million

South Africa’s population was estimated at approximately 47,4-million at mid-year 2006, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Tuesday. In addition, Stats SA said the estimated overall HIV-prevalence rate is approximately 11%, from less than 9% in 2001, with the HIV-positive population estimated at approximately 5,2-million.

New England coach vows to do it his way

Steve McClaren wasted no time in distancing himself from Sven-Goran Eriksson. ”I’m going to do it my way,” McClaren said on Tuesday as he officially took over as England’s 11th national soccer coach. He assumed control exactly a month after England were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the World Cup by Portugal, ending Eriksson’s five-and-a-half year tenure.

Telkom tariffs reduced by 2,1%

Telkom’s tariffs are 2,1% lower overall as from Tuesday. On June 5, Telkom filed price adjustments with the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa, which were subsequently approved. Steven Hayward, Telkom’s managing executive for retail marketing, said that although the net impact of the proposed prices will vary, the overall effect will be a reduction in cost.

TV cameras get go-ahead for Shaik appeal

Television news groups have received the go-ahead from the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein to capture court footage during the upcoming appeal hearing of Durban businessman Schabir Shaik, a court official said on Tuesday. ”The president of the Supreme Court of Appeal decided that media coverage will be allowed in court during the matter,” he said.

Ugandan rebel chief holds formal meeting with mediator

The elusive leader of a brutal 19-year northern Uganda rebellion held his first formal meeting with a chief peace mediator and a Ugandan government negotiator on Tuesday. Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, warmly shook hands with Riek Machar, who is Vice-President of the autonomous government of Southern Sudan and chief mediator of the peace talks.

Cabinet ‘worried’ about violent crime

The biggest population of foreign nationals engaged in crime in South Africa hailed from neighbouring Zimbabwe and Mozambique, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula told journalists on Tuesday. He also said the violent nature of crime in the country is to be investigated as part of a revamped crime-fighting plan.

Military brats get their own magazine

A new United States magazine is targeting a constantly shifting, often ignored group of Americans who have been among those most affected by the ”war on terror” — more than two-thirds of a million children whose parents are in the armed services and who call themselves ”military brats”.
