Schumi doesn’t have Alonso worried

Defending world champion Fernando Alonso is not worried about Michael Schumacher’s current dominant form, despite being beaten by his rival for the third race in a row. Schumacher’s fourth victory in his home race, the German Grand Prix, helped him slash Alonso’s championship lead from 17 points to 11.

Travelgate mired in legal wrangling

Legal representation and a mooted separation of trials both need to be finalised before Parliament’s so-called ”Travelgate” saga can proceed to trial, the Cape High Court heard on Monday. Cape Judge President John Hlophe acceded to a defence proposal to postpone the matter to October 17, granting the 28 accused an ephemeral reprieve.

Thirty die in Ugandan fuel-tanker crash

Thirty people were killed and four others seriously injured when a passenger minibus collided with a fuel tanker in central Uganda, police said on Monday. Police said 27 people on the bus died instantly, while three others suffocated as they scooped fuel that spilled from the Rwanda-bound tanker after the accident on Sunday.

Ugandan officials meet elusive rebel chief

Ugandan government officials met overnight with the elusive Lord’s Resistance Army leader Joseph Kony ahead of the resumption of peace talks aimed at ending a 19-year-old insurgency, officials said on Monday. The spokesperson for the Ugandan delegation said Walter Ochora, a district commissioner for northern Uganda’s Gulu District, met the rebel supremo in Nabanga.

UK’s nuclear-waste dump seeks a home

The United Kingdom will eventually have to bury its growing pile of nuclear waste deep underground, but urgently needs somewhere to safely stash it in the meantime, a government-commissioned study said on Monday. The Committee on Radioactive Waste Management called for a nationwide search for a suitable site for a vast, underground nuclear-waste dump.

UN sets deadline for Iran to halt nuclear work

The United Nations Security Council on Monday passed a resolution ordering Iran to halt its controversial nuclear work by August 31 or face possible sanctions. Resolution 1 696 expresses "serious concern" at Iran’s refusal to comply with International Atomic Energy Agency orders to halt uranium enrichment and other nuclear work.
