Aussie kids aged six, 10 go on road trip

Two young brothers aged 10 and six drove for more than 100km along one of Australia’s busiest roads to visit their grandfather, police said on Monday. The pair reached speeds of up to 90kph as they raced along the Newell highway in their grandmother’s station wagon, shocking fellow motorists who alerted the police.

Koeberg expected at 100% capacity by Monday

Nuclear power station Koeberg was operating at 90% capacity on Sunday and would be fully operational by Monday, Eskom said. ”It is generating about 90% of its output … The staff at Koeberg will continue monitoring the situation and increase capacity to 100% by tomorrow [Monday],” said company spokesperson Fanie Zulu.

DRC’s media regulator warns of hate speech

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s independent media regulator accused the president and several vice-presidents of allowing TV and radio stations under their control to incite intolerance and hatred before the July 30 elections. The vote for president and the national assembly will be the first since independence from Belgium in 1960, and it is seen as a key step toward stability in the vast country.

Federer looks to rebound on grass

Maybe what Roger Federer needs in order to beat Rafael Nadal is a change of scenery. Bring on the grass. The lawn tennis season begins this week — just the thing to put a little spring back in Federer’s step. He’ll start preparations for Wimbledon by playing in Germany this week after losing to Nadal in the French Open final.

Absa to boost ATMs, self-service kiosks

Banking group Absa plans to spend R80-million on the upgrade and expansion of its automated teller machines (ATMs) and network of kiosks in the current financial year to the end of December 2006. The expansion will comprise 350 new ATMs, 115 self-service kiosks (non-cash terminals) and 250 internet kiosks.

Mbeki pays tribute to Inkosi Bhambatha

Sounds of Zulu war dances and a military parade filled the air on Sunday as South Africans hailed a Zulu hero whose rebellion a century ago sowed the first seeds of black resistance. Soldiers and Zulu warriors, dressed in traditional leopard skins, joined thousands to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Bhambatha rebellion, an event that had huge ramifications in South African history.
