Tuk-tuks for Jozi?

South Africa is to take a further step away from Europe and towards its siblings in the East. Johannesburg and Pretoria will soon have ”tuk-tuks” — the three-wheeled motor vehicles that swarm through Asian cities such as Bangkok and Mumbai — buzzing along its streets.

Rooney on Ronaldo: ‘I’ll split him in two’

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, criticised for his role in Wayne Rooney’s sending off at the World Cup, won’t be back at Manchester United and can expect payback from the star England striker in the future. Quoting an unnamed source, The Sun newspaper reported on Monday that Rooney threatened to ”split him in two” when the two next meet.

Schumacher tops in incident-filled US Grand Prix

Michael Schumacher cruised to his third win of the season in the United States Grand Prix on Sunday as he led home a Ferrari one-two after an incident-filled race. Schumacher beat Felipe Massa by 7,9 seconds as he took a record fifth win at the Indianapolis circuit and cut Spaniard Fernando Alonso’s lead in the World Championship to 19 points.

Lion tamer attacked by one of his charges

A lion tamer at a Moscow circus had to have 100 stitches after he was clawed and bitten by one of his charges during Saturday evening’s performance, Russian media said. The tamer at the Nikulin Circus, Artur Bagdasarov, sustained injuries to his head and one of his hands when he intervened to stop a fight between two of the 10 tigers on stage.

Darfur peace deal on brink of collapse

The ”severely paralysed” Darfur peace agreement ”does not resonate with the people” and is in danger of collapse, the head of the United Nations mission in Sudan wrote in his blog. But Jan Pronk said the pact was still salvageable if revisions were made, calling it ”a good text, an honest compromise”.

Fifa to open inquiry into Torsten Frings

Germany could be hit by a late blow ahead of Tuesday’s World Cup semifinal with Italy after Fifa announced they would take a decision whether to punish influential midfielder Torsten Frings. Fifa took the decision on Sunday after viewing television footage in which he apparently hits Argentinian striker Julio Cruz after the quarterfinal.
