Heavy fighting continues in Mogadishu

Heavy fighting flared anew on Friday in the lawless Somali capital Mogadishu as Islamic militia and gunmen loyal to a United States-backed warlord alliance clashed for a sixth day with little respite. At least 13 people were killed in the new violence, and four bodies were recovered from a house hit by mortar shells in Mogadishu’s northern Sisi neighbourhood, witnesses said.

King’s former ministers rounded up in Nepal

Four ministers appointed by Nepal’s king during his 14 months of absolute rule were arrested and detained for 90 days on the orders of the new government on Friday, relatives, police and media said. Former home minister Kamal Thapa, ex-foreign minister Ramesh Nath Pandey and the royal government’s spokesperson Shrish Shumshere Rana were among those rounded up.

Ngcuka threatens legal action against ANCYL

Former national director of public prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka on Friday threatened legal action against African National Congress Youth League leader Fikile Mbalula. Ngcuka said he rejected ”with contempt” insinuations by Mbalula that he had a hand in the laying of a rape charge against former deputy president Jacob Zuma.

Thint judgement expected next week

The Durban High Court reserved judgement on Friday in a bid by arms company Thint for immediate further particulars on the corruption charges it is to face alongside former deputy president Jacob Zuma. Thint and Thint Holdings filed papers in the court last month seeking to compel the prosecution to make available further particulars on .the indictment

Prince Naseem jailed for 15 months

Former world featherweight boxing champion Naseem Hamed was jailed on Friday for 15 months after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. The former WBO champ was sentenced at the city’s Crown Court by Judge Alan Goldsack, who also banned the 32-year-old Hamed from driving for four years.
