Focused Hugo sticks to game plan

Jean Hugo held his nerve to cap a brilliant fortnight with back-to-back wins at the inaugural SAA Pro-Am Invitational at Paarl Golf Club on Saturday, just a week after breaking a six-year title drought at Arabella. Hugo held off a valiant challenge from overnight leader Chris Swanepoel and his former caddy, Gerlou Roux.

Rooney suffers blow to World Cup dream

Wayne Rooney’s World Cup dream suffered a potentially shattering blow on Saturday when Manchester United confirmed the striker will be out of action for six weeks after breaking his foot in the Premiership clash with Chelsea. A statement released by Old Trafford said Rooney had broken the ”fourth metatarsal on his right foot”.

Brumbies, Hurricanes notch up victories

The ACT Brumbies overwhelmed the Queensland Reds 36-0 on Saturday in Canberra, Australia, all but clinching a semifinal berth in rugby’s Super 14 competition. All Blacks hooker Andrew Hore scored three tries for the Wellington Hurricanes’ 35-10 win over the Waikato Chiefs in Wellington, New Zealand.

Kaizer Chiefs eased into the final of the Absa Cup at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Saturday afternoon after a gruelling but goalless 120 minutes against Mamelodi Sundowns. In spite of the unmistakable tension and excitement both on and off the pitch, play often deteriorated to an amateurish level.

Stormers defy the odds against Crusaders

The Stormers defied the odds to beat the log-leading Crusaders 28-17 in a fiercely contested Super 14 match at Newlands on Saturday night. Captain De Wet Barry got the Stormers off to a dream start in the first minute when he intercepted Crusaders hooker Corey Flynn’s pass and scored under the posts.

Bulls hold on for thrilling win

The Bulls held on grimly for a thrilling 34-17 win over the Sharks in an action-packed Super 14 match played at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday night. The Bulls led 27-3 at the break and played such complete rugby that one would have been forgiven for writing the Sharks off after just 40 minutes.
