Falcons make late dash for Vodacom Cup final

The Falcons would have come away from this weekend’s Vodacom Cup action full of self-belief as they charge towards a place in the final of the competition. With the Blue Bulls beaten by the Lions and the Falcons beating the Leopards, it looks likely that the men from the East Rand will join the Wildebeest in this year’s final on May 20.

Chiefs avenge earlier loss to Stars

Kaizer Chiefs, showing more composure and direction than they had in recent games, dimmed Silver Stars’ bright lights and gained a revenge 2-1 Premier Soccer League victory at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday afternoon. In the process, the Amakhosi ensured the consolation prize of finishing at least third in the log.

Harewood helps West Ham into FA Cup final

A Marlon Harewood second-half super strike gave West Ham a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup semifinal at Villa Park in Birmingham on Sunday. England Under-21 striker Harewood sealed a tense clash and clinched West Ham’s first FA Cup final appearance since 1980 with a classy finish midway through the second half.

Croatian ‘Dracula’ revived to lure tourists

As evening mist slowly embraces the village of Kringa in the heart of Croatia’s picturesque Istrian peninsula, a few young enthusiasts gather in a bar trying to revive the legend of a 17th-century local Dracula. Sitting in a red velvet chair in the Vampire bar, decorated with garlic wreaths and lamps with crosses, Mladen Rajko explains how local tourist authorities launched a project last year called "Jure Grando, the Vampire from Kringa".

Schumacher wins San Marino duel

Overtaking at the San Marino Grand Prix is about as difficult as passing another car on the narrow, single-lane country roads that surround the Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit. Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso know the routine all too well. Schumacher held off Alonso for nearly half of the 62 laps in a duel to the finish on Sunday.

Nadal extends his mastery over Federer

Rafael Nadal forced Roger Federer out of his comfort zone to defeat the Swiss for the fourth time in five meetings with a 6-2, 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) victory on Sunday to win the Monte Carlo Masters. Success in three hours and 49 minutes marked Federer’s second defeat this season — both at the hands of Nadal.

Alaskan boys ‘planned school massacre’

Six boys at a small Alaskan middle school were arrested at the weekend on suspicion of planning to carry out a Columbine-style massacre. Police in the town of North Pole said the arrests were made after a concerned parent raised the alarm. Officers say the boys — all around the age of 13 — intended to bring guns and knives to the school to kill their classmates and teachers.
