Hundreds killed in hajj stampede

At least 345 people were killed on Thursday in a stampede at the procession symbolising the stoning of the devil during the annual pilgrimage, said Saudi Health Minister Hamad bin Abdullah al-Maneh. About 289 other pilgrims were wounded in the accident due to "unruly pilgrims, and a problem of luggage," al-Maneh told reporters.

Promising SA jockey dies in car accident

South African horse racing was struck by yet another tragedy when newly qualified jockey LJ Katjedi (26) died in a car accident on Wednesday night. He had qualified as a jockey on January 3, only eight days before his death, and was due to ride his first races as a professional jockey on Wednesday at the Vaal.

Outbreak of army worm threatens Zimbabwe’s crops

Zimbabwe’s struggling farmers have lost close to 1 000ha of grain crops to an outbreak of the devastating army worm pest, the private Daily Mirror reported on Thursday. The outbreak of army worm — a caterpillar that eats crops — was top of Zimbabwe’s state-run radio bulletins earlier this week in a sign of just how seriously the authorities take the threat.
