Carter leads Crusaders to win over Sharks

All Blacks flyhalf Daniel Carter kicked a long-range dropped goal with eight minutes remaining on Saturday to give the Canterbury Crusaders a 22-20 win over South Africa’s Sharks in rugby’s Super 14. Carter’s shot from 50m — the second dropped goal of his first-class career — gave Canterbury the lead for the first time in the match.

Stormers miss opportunity against Brumbies

The ACT Brumbies recovered from 15-3 down in the second half to draw 15-15 in their Super 14 match against the Stormers at Newlands on Friday evening. Kobus van der Merwe’s Stormers, however, will again reflect on the match as a missed opportunity as they played a good first half to lead 9-3 at the break.

Pumas continue good form

The Pumas continued their good form in the Vodacom Cup and beat the Lions 35-29 in a tight match played in Witbank on Friday night. The Blue Bulls had to come back from an eight-point deficit at half-time to secure a 39-21 victory against the Bulldogs in East London, and the Falcons condemned the Cheetahs to another loss.

No super-subs in SA vs Australia series

The trial super-sub rule will not be used during the Standard Bank series between South Africa and Australia starting on Sunday — although both teams will name super-subs. At its chief executives’ meeting earlier this month, the International Cricket Council decided to drop the measure with effect from March 21.

Arroyo under attack over state of emergency

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo faced criticism from prominent Filipinos on Saturday for declaring a state of emergency to quash a coup plot, with a former president and military commander saying the move will hurt the Philippines unless it is rescinded soon. Meanwhile, police raided the offices of a newspaper critical of Arroyo.
