Patients suffering from severe lupus have experienced improvement when injected with blood stem cells from their own bone marrow, according to a study published in the United States. Of the patients with life-threatening lupus who received the treatment, 50% were disease free five years afterward, said the study.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi on Thursday accused Eritrea of arrogant war-mongering behavior as border tensions between the arch-rival neighbours intensified after a recent lull. Meles blamed the current frontier stalement on Eritrea, which has warned new conflict is looming because Ethiopia has refused to accept a border demarcation.

Two labour movements signed a coalition agreement to represent Telkom workers in Johannesburg on Thursday. Solidarity and the Communication Workers’ Union announced they will represent Telkom workers jointly. The unions said the coalition will represent a clear majority in Telkom.

Rescue workers found eight more survivors and recovered eight bodies on Thursday as the search continued for people missing two days after a ferry sank in rough waters off eastern Indonesia, officials said. The latest discoveries brought the number of survivors from Tuesday night’s accident to 121.

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf summarily sacked the whole staff of the country’s finance ministry during a short surprise visit as she embarked on an anti-corruption campaign. ”All employees of this ministry are hereby dismissed, and will have to apply to come back if they wish,” Johnson-Sirleaf told the employees.
