Titans return to top of the table

The Titans jumped back to the top of the Standard Bank Cup table after stuttering to an exciting two-wicket win over the luckless Cape Cobras at Supersport Park on Sunday. The visitors now prop up the bottom of the log without a win in five outings. Set a small target of 171, the Titans got off to a cautious start.

Diallo goal leads Cosmos to victory

”Three points are three points,” philosophised Jomo Cosmos owner and coach Jomo Sono after his team’s 1-0 Premier Soccer League win over Classic on Sunday afternoon. In other matches, Supersport United and Bloemfontein Celtic drew 1-1, Sundowns and Pirates as well as Arrows and Leopards drew 0-0, and Santos beat Stars 1-0.

Gold breaks through $540 an ounce

Spot gold on Monday burst through the $540-a-troy-ounce mark for the first time since March 1981 on fund-buying of the metal. At 9.45am, gold was quoted at $541,10/oz. The spot price of platinum on Monday climbed to $1 017,50 an ounce — its highest level since March 1980.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton on Sunday and slipped down to third place in the Premier League. Four days after United’s early Champions League exit, the team failed to take advantage of their numerous chances at their Old Trafford stadium.

Ernie Els back on top

In only his second tournament following a five-month injury break, Ernie Els returned to the winner’s enclosure at the Dunhill Championship on Sunday. Els may have coughed and spluttered through the early rounds at the par-72 Leopard Creek golf course this week, but class and experience told in the final round.

Firefighters tackle massive UK oil blaze

Firefighters were tackling a massive blaze at a key oil depot north of London early on Monday, after explosions sent orange fireballs and a pall of thick black smoke into the sky over southern England. The explosions and fire happened before dawn on Sunday, leaving 43 people injured in what police said appeared to be an accidental blast.
