With the trial of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein on charges of crimes against humanity set to resume Tuesday, the court still had to decide on Monday who will be the chief judge. For the last seven sessions Judge Rizkar Mohammed Amin has been the most public judicial face of the trial of Saddam and seven co-defendants over the massacre of Shi’ites from the town of Dujail in the 1980s.

Militants holding four foreign hostages in Nigeria claimed on Sunday they would release the captives soon, according to a statement purportedly from the militant group. The hostages were seized near a Shell oil field on January 11 by a group that also claimed responsibility for other oil industry attacks that have cut Nigerian production by almost 10%.

The United Nations on Monday issued an urgent appeal for -million in emergency aid for multiple humanitarian crises and threats facing Ethiopia, including the risk of famine from a searing drought that has hit East Africa. About 1,7-million Ethiopians are among up to 11-million people throughout four nations in the region in dire need of food assistance to survive.

The Gauteng department of local government on Sunday announced it would be looking into closing all open manholes that were no longer in use. This follows the death of Mpho Raliete (3) of Katlehong on the East Rand, who died after falling into a manhole on Friday. The child’s body was washed through the sewage line and found 15km away at the treatment plant in Kliprivier.

About 20 000 people have fled violence in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to seek refuge in the border to Uganda over a four-day period, the United Nations refugee agency said on Sunday. Most of the refugees said they had fled to escape violence, while about 5 000 said they left the DRC because they feared attack.

Listed health and beauty retailer New Clicks has reported a 15,1% increase in turnover for the four months to end-December 2005 compared to that of the year-earlier period. New Clicks said the group’s retail brands had increased sales by 9,8% during the period, while same-store sales were up 9,6%.

Brian van Rooyen has vowed to fight off any attempt to unseat him as president of the South African Rugby Union (Saru), The Mercury website reported on Monday. Denying reports that he had been asked to leave, he said: ”I will make myself available for the elections on February 24. Reports that I have been asked to leave are factually incorrect.”

Palestinian leaders on Sunday tried to end the political and clan violence that has plagued Gaza since the Israeli withdrawal by ordering their followers to keep guns off the streets during this week’s elections. The growing lawlessness, fuelled by the proliferation of weapons turned inward now there are no Israelis to fight, has resulted in a string of shootings.
