Drama and bad luck on final day of Dusi

Hank McGregor and Martin Dreyer won the Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon in a titanic struggle with Ant Stott and Wayne Thompson, until the race was decided by an accident in a major rapid on the final leg from Inada Dam to Durban. Bad luck continued to plague the top crew of Shaun Biggs and Loveday Zondi.

Spears put up good fight in going down

Showing vast improvement, the Southern Spears gave the Cats a good go for their money in going down 29-11 in their Super 14 warm-up match at the Absa Stadium on Saturday. The match was watched by a large, appreciative crowd dressed in red, but the weather was sultry enough to make even the skinniest person sweat.

Beattie help Everton upset Arsenal

James Beattie scored in the 13th minute on Saturday, and Everton won their fourth straight English Premier League match by defeating Arsenal 1-0. Also, Neil Mellor scored in second-half injury time to give Wigan a 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough. ‘Boro drew level after trailing 2-0, only to let a valuable point slip away.

Eto’o scores for Cameroon in Egypt

In Africa or in Europe, Samuel Eto’o keeps scoring. Changing continents made no difference for the prolific FC Barcelona striker, who scored a hat-trick to lead Cameroon to a 3-1 victory over Angola in an African Nations Cup match on Saturday. Côte d’Ivoire had a narrow win over Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo beat Togo.

Russians sink Chiefs in shoot-out

A succession of guided Russian missiles in a penalty shoot-out that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez had precious little chance of saving gave FC Moscow an entertaining, action-packed victory in the international club friendly at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Europe bids to halt tide of art smuggled to US

A series of legal actions has been launched by European governments to regain priceless works of art that they claim have been illegally smuggled to the United States to be sold off to wealthy collectors and museums. One of the highest-profile cases is in France, where it has been dubbed ”The Affair of the Hebrew Manuscripts”.
