Go home, Gbagbo tells protesters

Côte d’Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo and Prime Minister Charles Konan Banny called on Wednesday for their compatriots to end the street violence which has brought chaos to Abidjan and go back to work. Clashes between supporters of Gbagbo and United Nations peacekeepers saw a renewed bid to storm the UN base in Abidjan and the killing of four Côte d’Ivoire citizens in the west.

Battle between nomads leaves 38 dead in Kenya

A battle for livestock between Ethiopian and Kenyan nomads has left 38 people dead in drought-stricken northern Kenya, official and aid workers said on Thursday. Dongiro warriors crossed into Kenya last Friday and attacked Turkana herdsmen in order to steal their animals, said the district commissioner for Turkana.

Federer, Clijsters advance but Pierce ousted

Roger Federer saved some energy for the rest of the Australian Open, while Kim Clijsters hobbled into the third round. Fifth-seeded Mary Pierce, the 1995 Australian champion and a two-time finalist at last year’s majors, became the highest-seeded player ousted in the tournament when she lost 6-3, 7-5 to Iveta Benesova on Thursday.

SA pays tribute to Anton Rupert

Statesmen, politicians and business leaders paid tribute to South African entrepreneur Anton Rupert on Thursday, calling him a patriot who fought the inhumanities of apartheid and contributed to wildlife, conservation and the arts. Former president Nelson Mandela said the country had lost a friend.

Moscow endures third day of Arctic cold

Cold weather so painful that even winter-hardened Russians complained about it has gripped Moscow and much of the rest of the country. At least two dozen people have reportedly died of exposure nationwide and Russians used a record amount of electricity to keep warm. Temperatures dropped to minus 30 degrees Celsius overnight.

Injured Clijsters advances in Melbourne

Second seed Kim Clijsters struggled with a hip injury that threatens to derail her Australian Open campaign as she fought her way into the third round at Melbourne Park on Thursday. The United States Open champion downed China’s Meng Yuan 6-4, 6-2, but needed medical attention on her right hip early in the second set.
