German cannibal says he feels no guilt

A self-confessed German cannibal on Tuesday said at his retrial for murder that five years after butchering and eating an apparently willing victim he felt no guilt. Armin Meiwes (44) told the court that cannibalism was against the codes of social conduct but not a crime because his victim had wanted to die in this way.

Defending champions South Africa top the seedings in the 2006 International Rugby Board (IRB) Under-21 World Championship to be played in France from June 9 to 25. The IRB said on Monday South Africa will be locking horns with Argentina, Georgia and France during the pool stages of the tournament.

Mine blasts rock Sri Lanka amid fresh bid to save truce

Suspected Tiger rebels set off two more mines and fought a gun battle with troops on Tuesday as the United Nations urged talks and Norway made a fresh bid to pull Sri Lanka back from the brink of war. Military officials said members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ambushed a navy bus by setting off a landmine in the restive northeast port district of Trincomalee.

Austria orders return of Klimt paintings

An Austrian arbitration court ruled on Tuesday that five paintings by Austrian art nouveau painter Gustav Klimt seized by the Nazis should be returned to their owner’s family. The court ruled that "conditions have been met for the five paintings to be given back to the heirs to Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer".

Spectacular sights to be seen in Iceland

Polar lights offer a grandiose spectacle especially when observed from a 37-degrees-Celsius thermal bath at air temperatures of below zero. Iceland’s Blue Lagoon has no artificial light to spoil the show. Polar light activity is best seen on clear nights during autumn and winter. The "moon landscape" in which the thermal bath is situated evokes a surreal atmosphere.

Arctic cold grips western Russia

Two people froze to death in Moscow, officials said on Tuesday, as Arctic cold from Siberia descended on western Russia, sending nighttime temperatures to as low as minus 36 degrees Celsius and prompting warnings of power cuts to some businesses. Forecasters said the cold snap is expected to last most of the week.
