Resilient buys Highveld Mall for R270m

Resilient Property Income Fund has agreed to acquire Highveld Mall, a retail centre in Witbank that is now under construction, for R270-million, the company said on Tuesday. The 40 000 square metre centre, which is due for completion in April 2007, will be anchored by branches of retailers Edgars, Woolworths and Pick ‘n Pay.

China’s race for energy resources only just heating up

China’s $2.3-billion Nigerian oil venture is a major step forward for the energy ravenous country as it seeks to power its fast-growing economy but analysts said on Tuesday the race was just heating up. China National Overseas Oil Corp’s purchase of a 45% stake in the Akpo field is the biggest overseas investment by Beijing since China National Petroleum Corp’s took over PetroKazakhstan for $4,18-billion in October.

Arsenal, Man United hope for League Cup trophy

The League Cup probably offers Arsenal and Manchester United their best chance for a trophy this season. Both teams play this week in the first leg of the League Cup semifinals, with Arsenal at Wigan on Tuesday and Man United at Blackburn on Wednesday. Neither team are challenging Chelsea this season in the league.

‘A quiet madman, never far from tears’

Colourful Canadian poet Irving Layton, twice considered for a Nobel Prize in literature for his provocative verse, died on Wednesday in Montreal at the age of 93, according to media reports. Layton, who once described himself as "a quiet madman, never far from tears", wrote about 50 books of poetry and prose over five decades.

SA Under-23 team fight to victory

A late red card to Senegal and a 90th-minute strike by Gift Leremi propelled South Africa’s Under-23 soccer team to a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Katlehong Stadium on Monday afternoon. The teams were locked 0-0 at the break after a bruising opening 45 minutes with neither side backing down.

Fiery mouse takes revenge

A mouse took fiery revenge on a man who threw it into a pile of burning leaves by burning his house down. The flaming mouse ran back into the wooden house of 81-year-old Luciano Mares, in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, setting it afire and virtually destroying the building.

Despres wins on day of Dakar tragedy

French title holder Cyril Despres, riding a KTM, on Monday broke through the pain barrier of a recently dislocated collarbone to win the ninth stage of the Dakar Rally, which was marred by the death of Australian rival Andy Caldecott. The car stage was won by Frenchman and defending champion Stephane Peterhansel.
