Cosatu stayaway ‘hardly felt’

There were conflicting reports of the success of a Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) call for a worker stayaway in Mpumalanga, the Free State and Northern Cape on Monday. Cosatu said the protest was a ”magnificent” success, while the South African Chamber of Business said its impact on businesses was hardly felt.

Agoraphobia ended songwriter’s career

Prolific songwriter Baker Knight, whose hits were recorded by stars ranging from Elvis Presley to Ricky Nelson, Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, has died. He was 72. Born Thomas Baker Knight Jnr, he died on Wednesday of natural causes at his home in Birmingham, according to his daughter, Tuesday Knight.

China’s most-acclaimed modern writer dies

China’s most-acclaimed modern writer Ba Jin — whose novels criticised traditional Chinese society — died on Monday in Shanghai, state media said. He was 100. A native of Chengdu city in south-west China’s Sichuan province, Ba was considered by the government and other Chinese authors to be the greatest writer in modern China.

Union welcomes DRDGold quake report

Trade union Solidarity on Monday welcomed recommendations by the Department of Minerals and Energy that fines be levied against DRDGold following a fatal earth tremor earlier this year. ”In addition, the responsible rock engineer, production manager, mine supervisor and shift boss must face prosecution,” the union said.

Vatican finance chief served five popes

Retired Vatican finance chief Cardinal Giuseppe Caprio has died, the Vatican said on Monday. He was 90. The Vatican said the Italian cardinal died on Saturday. Pope Benedict XVI on Monday praised his service in a condolence message, saying Caprio served five popes in ”delicate and important” offices.

Three strong earthquakes hit Turkey

Three violent earthquakes shook western Turkey on Monday, cracking walls, collapsing chimneys and sending 30 people to hospital, including a man who reportedly threw himself from the fifth floor of a building in panic. Turkey’s top seismologist warned of the threat of more earthquakes.
