Hundreds of thousands of residents along the Gulf of Mexico coast remained homeless on Wednesday after two devastating hurricanes as US leaders fought over the government’s response to the disaster. The death toll from Saturday’s Hurricane Rita rose to 10 on Tuesday, while the number of dead from Katrina passed 1 100.

An infamous swimming-pool-based clinch from the much-criticised 1995 film Showgirls received the dubious honour on Wednesday of being named the worst sex scene in the history of cinema. Second place was awarded to Damage, a 1992 European art-house film starring Jeremy Irons.

A British university has launched a three-year degree course in the hunt for life beyond the planet Earth. The University of Glamorgan this week launched what it said is Britain’s first undergraduate course in astrobiology, the search for extraterrestrial life.

Slain mining magnate Brett Kebble’s brother, Guy, has called on his killers to ”stand up and be counted” and not act cowardly following the Tuesday-night killing of his brother, whom he described as ”a brilliant man”. Asked about the motive, former judge Willem Heath — who is a friend of the Kebbles — said the killing points to a hijacking at this stage.

A woman suicide bomber blew herself up at an Iraqi police recruitment centre on Wednesday, killing five people in an attack claimed by al-Qaeda’s Iraq frontman, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. United States President George Bush warned again of an upsurge in violence ahead of next month’s vote on the draft Iraqi Constitution.

A German-language Namibian weekly is to publish an apology after an advertisement appeared in its pages celebrating the death of ”the big monster” Simon Wiesenthal, the publisher said on Wednesday. Hans Feddersen, of the Plus weekly, admitted that it was ”not a good idea” to publish the advertisement.

Schoolchildren in the Eastern Cape should not have to bear the brunt of the province’s poor budget planning, the Democratic Alliance said on Wednesday. The DA’s Helen Zille appealed to the minister of education to intervene to stop the province from implementing proposed severe budget cuts to the school feeding scheme.

The teenager accusing Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi of rape did not worship the soccer player, her aunt told the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Defence lawyer Ike Motloung informed the court his client will testify the girl had been a nuisance and ”was after him”.
