Our three-year-old daughter often refuses to wear anything other than pink, and she mothers soft toys; and while our eight-month-old son has shown no noticeable preference for blue or for watching the soccer with me, it’s probably only a matter of time.

In all the confusion over Germany’s election result, one winner is clear. The newly founded Linkspartei (Left Party) has taken 54 seats, leapfrogging Joschka Fischer’s Greens, who have been part of the governing coalition for the past seven years. It is an extraordinary achievement and means that for the first time since World War II the Social Democrats Party (SPD) is faced with a rival to its left.

United States and Iraqi forces said they had killed the second most powerful figure in the al-Qaeda in Iraq organisation, but the organisation denied that Abdullah Abu Azzam was their number two leader and said ”it was not confirmed” that he had been killed. Police also found the corpses of 22 Iraqi men who had been shot in the head and dumped in a deserted area of Badrah district northeast of Kut city.

President Hosni Mubarak vowed to deliver on pledges for reform when he was sworn in Tuesday for a fifth term in office after sweeping to victory in Egypt’s first contested presidential poll. ”I will work with the utmost determination towards the implementation of the programme I proposed during the electoral campaign,” Mubarak said after taking the oath of office in a ceremony in Parliament.

The number of people employed in the formal non-agricultural business sector increased by about 131 000 from March to June, according to Statistics SA’s quarterly employment statistics released on Tuesday. Employment in this sector increased from about 6 945-million to about 7 076-million or 1,9%, it said.

A fifth person has died from typhoid after an outbreak in Delmas, a spokesperson for the Mpumalanga premier said on Tuesday. ”Twenty-three-year-old Alfred Thombeni died last night [Monday] at Bernice Samuel Hospital,” Lebona Mosia said. Since the outbreak was identified on August 22, 594 cases have been confirmed and 3 318 people have been treated for diarrhoea.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department on Tuesday launched a computerised network system to enable officers to re-issue summonses and warrants of arrest to offenders on the spot. The system is aimed at dealing with the legal issues that have arisen regarding the arrests of motorists for outstanding fines without showing them a warrant.

Google will stop boasting on its home page about the number of web pages it has stored in its index, even as the online search engine leader continues a crusade to prove it scans substantially more material than its rivals. The company planned to remove the index size late on Monday.
